If you are just entering the entrepreneurial world, your wardrobe may still be filled with clothes from your previous job. You may be strapped for cash and time to buy new clothes, thinking, “I can get by with what I have and then when I ‘m earning more money I'll treat myself to a makeover.” Let me share with you that is a big mistake!
You see, your wardrobe is a reflection of your inner thoughts. It's an expression of you, your confidence and your business.
You've decided to enter the entrepreneurial world to do something you love and to make a difference in the world. The person you are becoming is not the same person you were in your old job. Your energy is changing and that means your style needs to change too.
You must celebrate your new journey and commit to it by affirming this within your wardrobe. Here's what you need to do:
For 9 days, discard 3 articles of clothing per day. These pieces are the ones that do not honor who you are and who you are becoming. They are the ones you either never wear or put on and feel your energy plummet. Donate or pass these along to friends.
Next organize your closet by placing the items you where the most at the front. Create sections for work, casual, going out, workout clothes, etc.
Lastly, take some time to define your lifestyle. What does your entrepreneurial lifestyle look like? Are you home based? Do you have a separate office where you need to be dressed everyday? How much time do you spend networking or giving live presentations? By getting clear about where you spend your time you can calculate what pieces you need to have in your wardrobe. If you want to land the interview on Oprah, do you have that outfit ready in your closet? If your serious about your goals you will affirm them in your wardrobe.
In Fashion Feng Shui®, I teach clients how to identify their style by using the 5 elements. The Water Philosopher gal is the creative artistic and spiritual gal. The Wood Pioneer gal is the go-getter, health-nut always taking on a new task. The Charismatic Fire essence, is your PR, fashionista who loves to be the center of attention. The Earth Peacemaker gal is the caretaker who loves to be of service, she’s the nurturer who loves to create communities. The Perfectionist Metal gal, is organized, a leader and inspirational who loves making things beautiful.
Just understanding who you are can help you create a wardrobe that matches your authentic self. As an entrepreneur, you are always marketing your business, whether you are shopping for groceries or at a networking meeting. You never know when your next big opportunity is about to appear. Whether you are in heels or in a casual outfit, your clothes need to communicate who you are and what you are about.
It is good to be conscious that you are a serious, successful entrepreneur and your wardrobe has to express that. Let’s face it, you are more confident in clothes that feel good and look good. A nice pair of dark jeans, a turtle neck sweater, with cute boots and a few key accessories is a good look for a casual networking meeting or even a day long event.
You want to make sure your wardrobe is fresh embracing the new you and your mission. When you are networking you want to be operating from your true self. Shoes hold a lot of energy and wearing an old pair of shoes may make you feel like your old unconfident self who is to afraid to ask for an opportunity. If you have on a new pair of fabulous comfortable shoes that make you feel like a million bucks, you are more likely to take that risk and ask for the opportunity.
Just these few tips will help open your mind to new possibilities and help you become more clear about who you are and where your going and how your clothes and your closet play into that. So, what are you waiting for? Attack that closet and make room for a new wardrobe that aligns with and supports your entrepreneurial mission! Have fun!
