“I don't have a niche”
“Other people are doing what I'm doing, so I can't”
“I don't know what I'm doing”
And the worst of all….“BUT”!
If you're saying any of these things right now or are even thinking any of these things when it comes to your business, I need you to stop what you're doing right now and listen up.
Your thinking is a direct result of how well you're doing in business.
Now this may seem very basic and maybe something you've heard 1,000 times before, but as a Business Coach who works with emerging business owners who are trying to get more clients and make more money, I'm pretty used to seeing self-sabotage in action (believe me, I've been there too).
So what's behind this? Why are coaches and consultants doing this to themselves when all they want is to have a successful business?
Here's why…growing a business is an inside job. I've seen first hand how thinking and what you say to yourself can sabotage your business. There are too many business owners who have the skills and passion to succeed but the one thing that holds them back is their mindset.
Let's talk about how this looks in action. Take for example Lucy. Lucy's got a health coaching business specializing in how to become gluten free. Her business is based around what she did for herself to become gluten free when she was diagnosed with Celiac disease.
Even though it took Lucy month's of trial and error to find the right foods to eat (that were edible) and to stop feeling badly for herself because of her illness, she was finally able to eat healthy, learn how to eat out safely and cook really interesting foods.
Lucy started her business thinking she could help others do the same yet six months later she'd changed her niche three times, had written 14 Elevator Speeches, designed five opt-ins for her website and didn't have a single client.
What happened to the confident, enthusiastic Lucy? You guessed it, her mindset! Her thoughts, the constant internal questioning and doubts got the best of her and within three months she threw in the towel and closed her business.
Here's why this happens and why so few business owners make it in business long term. It's because they don't have the confidence to make decisions. But think about it, why should they? Most entrepreneurs have never done this before and becoming an entrepreneur takes practice and stepping into the mindset of an entrepreneur.
With all that said, I had to learn how to do it too and that's why I'd like to give you some of my favorite tips on starting to think like an entrepreneur so you don't sabotage your business:
Tip #1: Surround yourself with other aspiring entrepreneurs: One of the reasons I created the Expansion Coaching Club was because I know how isolating it can be to make decisions in a vacuum. Especially when you're an emerging business owner you need to know if you're making the right ones. Make sure you have a tribe who can tell you the truth
Tip #2: Study successful entrepreneurs: A great way to do this is to look in your industry and find the top level experts and study what they do, how fast they make decisions, how they choose to invest in themselves and who they surround themselves with. You can learn a lot from those who carved the path ahead of you
Tip #3: Take action and be okay with course correcting: I've worked with a lot of coaches who stay paralyzed in the same spot because they can't make a decision. It actually makes me nuts when I see this because it eats them alive. The only way to get out of being stuck is to move. That's what you need do when you get trapped in your own fear or indecisiveness. Make a decision, if it turns out to be wrong then be okay with the fact that it was a lesson and you can move on.
Tip #4: Lose the ADD: For some it's not taking action, for others it's taking too many actions. If you're thinking you need the next course, next training, next mentor, etc and you haven't worked on what you already have then stop spinning and focus. The more you think you don't know enough or have enough the more you'll keep searching. Consider that maybe everything you need to know is already inside and you just need someone to help you bring it to the surface.
Listen, I know it's hard to not listen to your thoughts (especially those that are telling you you're not good enough, smart enough, etc.) but know this, whatever you don't know you can learn. Whatever you don't have you can get. Whatever you want is possible. You just have to believe it.
Now it's your turn. Share your comments and thoughts in the post below and let me know what you think!
