If Employees Need Bosses, Don’t Solopreneurs Need Mentors?

December 27, 2012

In a recent Strategy Session with a prospective client who asked me to help her create her “2 Week Notice Plan” (TM) so that she could grow her business enough this year and quit her job; she told me she’d never heard of a Business Coach and wasn’t even sure why she’d need one.

It got me to thinking. It’s a given that all employees have supervisors and managers in their jobs but why is it that solopreneurs don’t think they need to hire someone to show them the ropes?

My guess—I think it has to do the word “solo” and that they assume they should go it alone.

Do employees do that? Can you imagine if every employee went to work every day and did whatever they wanted and had no sense of direction or specific goals?

And it would be pretty difficult if for them if they didn’t have anyone to run questions by when they got stumped or stuck.

So why is it that we think we should go it alone?

It’s really not just about the money. Yes, that’s one of the reasons but it goes deeper than that.

You see it’s about Trust and Fear– trust in ourselves and our business decisions and the fear of playing a bigger game.

But what most new entrepreneurs don’t realize is that when you transition into one it’s a process with a long learning curve. If you think about it, Corporate Business Professionals pay for an MBA, so why wouldn’t a new entrepreneur consider making an investment in their education as well?

I’ll never forget the first time I hired a mentor. I wondered where I would come up with the money to pay for the coaching program. But I took a leap of faith and very soon I found out how to earn that investment back. Within no time I did—in fact, I grew my business so quickly as a result of that one scary decision but I trusted myself and believed in myself enough to invest in my future success.

As you can see, it’s worked out I’m happy to say, I tripled that investment in less than 60 days and had the tools to create money in my business and I have, time and time again.
