How to Land More Speaking Gigs

One of my favorite compliments is, “Jeannie, I see you everywhere”.

I love it when people who I’ve never met before tell me that they heard me speak on an interview or webinar or saw me speaking at an event and they now feel like I’m popping up everywhere.

It’s really no coincidence that I appear to be everywhere, because in many ways I am.

I’ve purposely decided to grow my business by using my signature talk and sharing it with as many people and in as many places as possible.

  • Gotten to work with (and continue to get) amazing clients from all over the world
  • Allowed me to have $10K+ months
  • Helped more people share their gifts with the world
  • Helped my clients quit their jobs
  • Helped me quit my full-time job so I can work from home (part-time)

How is all that possible from speaking? Well, I learned how to take what I know and love and share it with the people who need to hear it most to help them learn how to do the exact same thing.

So how do you land more speaking gigs so you can share your gifts and message with more people?

  1. Have a Clear Message

When you know what it is you’re meant to be doing and the message you want to share with others you can then attract more people with it. The clearer you are about what you know and do and who you serve the easier it is for people to identify you as an expert.

In the beginning I didn’t have a clear message but the clearer I got about my purpose and passion the more opportunities came my way.

My unique brilliance is in showing how to take what it is you know and do, monetize it and share it through speaking.

So before you work on getting gigs, ask yourself these questions:

  1. What makes me unique?
  2. What do I know and or do?
  3. Who needs to hear about it?

Take a moment or two to write out the answers to these questions.

Here’s what I figured out, if you share your brilliance through a signature talk and deliver it in as many ways as possible you can reach more people and expand your business.

Once you’re clear about your message you then need to know where to find the individuals who need to hear it.

  1. Where is your audience?

Now that you know your message you want to determine where you can find people who need to hear it.

There are opportunities everywhere if you look. They’re online through interviews, podcasts, webinars and teleseminars and offline through networking events, associations, conferences and workshops.

The key is to determine where your audience is going and go there.

If you look closely you’ll find opportunities every day to speak. Be aware and be open to doing them.

  1. Positioning

In a future post you’ll be learning more about the elements of designing your signature talk but for now you want to know this – land the gig through your message and uniqueness.

If you don’t have a buttoned up talk designed yet then simply approach opportunities with your specialization. Tell them what you’re an expert in and what you can speak about. The fine tuning of the talk can come even after the gig.

The point is that you want to showcase yourself as an expert and start approaching opportunities to speak with gusto.

Don’t expect to land huge gigs in the beginning but start with people you know, places and organizations you’ve been or approach contacts at events you’ve gone to.
