Improve Your Webinars: 5 Webinar Mistakes that Will Cost You the Sale

February 26, 2015

5-webinar-mistakes

For years I’ve been listening to webinars, I make a habit of perfecting my craft and learning the tricks and tools of the trade.

Last week I saw a Facebook Ad, liked the topic and clicked through to find out more about what I’d learn on the training.

Everything about the process was pretty good until I got the to registration page where I began wondering if I’d be wasting my time. Instead of listening to my instincts I powered through and registered.

The day of the webinar I showed up for the training hoping to hear some good content and by minute two and slide three I was done. They hadn’t hooked me…any opportunity this person had for a sale from me was done, gonzo, over (and probably for good).

I stuck around for the remainder of the presentation, not to purchase but to analyze all the areas of improvement. (Call me a geek but that’s what I get from doing it for my clients all the time 🙂 And that’s exactly what I did. I found 5 major areas of improvement that even if they fix one could have made a bigger difference in making me buy.

What went so wrong? I’ll break down the 5 mistakes I found that you want to avoid in your next webinar

Mistake #1: No Cohesiveness

The first mistake was that the Ad and registration page didn’t properly represent the content the presentation was covering. I felt like it was a bait and switch operation. Make sure they’re connected.

Mistake #2: It’s ONLY a Little about YOU!

The second mistake was that the presenter went on and on about their story, their life, their success, their family. I showed up to hear how what they know would help me. Always flip the script so it’s a little about you and a LOT about your audience.

Mistake #3: Lack of Visual Engagement

By slide three I knew it was gone. There wasn’t an image of the presenter, it was mostly text and when there were visuals they were barely in alignment with the content. Even though I don’t want you to spend the entire time talking about yourself, I do want you to show me who you are and keep me engaged.

Mistake #4: Look Like You Put Effort Into Your Presentation

Please don’t make it look like you were just doing it on the fly. It looks like you don’t care. A spelling error or typo here and there is fine but a poorly done presentation doesn’t look like you put any thought into it. It makes me wonder why I’d want to make any investment in what you have to offer.

Mistake #5: Fluff Content is Transparent

Please make your content worth my while. You don’t have to give the entire farm away but you do need to give me something of value that makes me say it was worth my time to attend.

And that’s my 5 mistake recap… I’m sure I could come up with more but I’d love to hear what you think.
